Apulia (Puglia), Italy's boot heel in the south between the Adriatic and the Ionic sea, offers on the one hand the turquoise coloured sea, grottos and bays, white beaches; on the other hand a huge number of cultural treasures. You will also find wild orchids, poppy fields and age-old olive trees. The Gargano peninsula in Apulia's north is a tourist highlight with its lively main town Vieste, with a winding old town on an outcrop of chalk. In the hinterland you'll meet flocks of sheep, goats and pigs, protected by a shepherd and his dogs, like in ancient times. In central Apulia the gentle hilly Valle d'Itria is located. The Trulli, white round farmhouses with cone roofs are quite typical. Some of them have been turned into a holiday home.
