South of Naples some few visited regions of Italy lie, which still apply as "insiders' tip" for tourists.
Here you can't find popular holiday resorts, but rather small apartment structures, summer
cottages and vacations homes. Gentle tourism is in Campagnia, Basilikata and Calabria the slogan.
The regions have plenty to offer. Faraway from the mass tourism the landscape presents itself very
variously: far sand beaches and innumerable grottos mark the coast, to small
fisher places retained themselves their originality. Well wooded mountains are characterising the hinterland, in that a rare flora and
fauna has found a place for surviving.
Both the Cilento (second largest national park in Italy and UNESCO World
Heritage) in Campagnia, the national park del Pollino in Basilikata and the national park della Calabria invite to walking-tours. Further in the south, on Sicily, a landscape appears, which is barely to be described with few words. appears.
So one finds eternal snow on the Aetna, fruitful fields, barren landscape next to bizarre rock coasts with wide sand bays.
In the hinterland there are forests with oaks and beeches between the
rock regions, while the slopes near the sea are rather barren, covered with plants of the Macchia.
The most important peoples of the Mediterranean area have left their traces on Sicily in the course of the history.
