Sicily
Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, separated only a few kilometers from the mainland, is also called the
bridge between two worlds. The scenically variety reaches from dried landscapes up to luxuriant vegetation like orange groves,
cypresses, almont trees and palms. The coast is lined with picturesque little harbour towns and numerous charming canyons. But
you also get chaotic metropolis as well as idyllic baroque towns. Not to forget the numerous little islands in front of Sicily.
The character of Sicily was mostly influenced by many different conquerors and inhabitants of the island who have left many
visible marks which are still visible today. Such witnesses are the Greek temples, Roman villas, the arabian influenced
architecture of Palermo and Norman domes. |
