Balestrate
The small bathing resort Balestrate (6,000 inhabitants) lies 50 km far away from the capital Palermo at the gulf of Castellammare.
Two beautiful fine and long sandy beaches, some bays along the coast as well as the crystal-clear water invite to take a bath.
The hinterland is characterized by copse of smelling pines and blue gum trees. The native ones mainly live on cultivation of
wine and tourism. In the summer there are happen many celebrations, exhibitions and performances.

Capo D' Orlando
Approx. 80 kms to the west of Messina the place directly lies on the north coast of Sicily. After the legend Capo
D' Orlando was founded during the Trojan war. The characteristic cape prevails over the sea and was already in the past
a fight site of the Greeks, Romans and Arabs. Today the place is a meeting place for artists and painters and very richly
in the art treasures which are issued in offices and old villas. However, the place is known also for its hospitableness
and many meetings like traditional folklore and religious celebrations. To visit: the ruins of the castle from 14. Cent.,
the pilgrimage church Maria Santissima.

Castellammare del Golfo
At the feet of a high, rugged mountain rich in vegetation there lies the place Castellammare del Golfo,. founded 827 A.D.
from the Arabs. The castle gave its name to the place (Castello a mare = castle by the sea). By the extraordinary beauty
spot of his coasts and his close hinterland the small town has asserted itself rightly as a main attraction for tourists.
To visit: the castle, the church "Chiesa Madre", the fishing village Scopello, the nature reservation Zingaro.

Cefalú
The attractive small town at the north coast retained itself the character of a fisher place.
Thanks its favourable climate, the impressing inherent natural beauty, the valuable art treasures
and the beautiful sandy beach Cefalú offers itself for a longer stay. In the hinterland,
the dolomite massif of the Madonie rises to almost 2000 m, so that in winter it is possible to ski.
A part of this area was placed under protection and is well known since 1989 as Parco Regionale delle Madonie.

Collesano
Collesano, only ca 70 km from Palermo away, lies at the bottom of Monte Grotta del Signore in the “Parco delle Madonie”.
The mountains of the natural preserve belong to the highest of Sicily. There are botanic rarities, wonderful forests
and protected animal species. In the high of about 460 m the place offers a marvellous view on the surrounding landscape.
The ca 4000 inhabitants are mostly living from agriculture. To visit are e.g. the ruins of the castle from the 12. century
and the abbey Santa Maria di Gesu.

Erice
Aloft the sea, on the summit of the Monte San Giuliano (751m), lies the medieval city Erice in a unique landscape.
The place counts as one of the oldest cities of Sicily. Parts of the old battlement are to sight even today.
The whole place is an object of interest, the close lanes, scurrile baroque balcony consoles and the mysterious
inner courts, which charms each visitor.

Gioiosa Marea
The bathing resort and fishing place Gioiosa Marea, situated at the tyrrhenian coast between Capo of d' Orlando and the
gulf of Patti, is known for the cultivation of citrus fruits, olives and fruit. The village was founded in the 18. Cent.,
as the inhabitants of the village of the same name on the Capo Calavŕ pulled here. From the old village, which was called
Gioiosa Vecchia or Gioiosa Guardia, only some ruins are received. Gioiosa Marea lies approx. 80 km west of Messina.

Licata
The town with about 40.000 inhabitants lies in the province Agrigento between the "Monte di Licata" and the river Salso,
which gave its name to the place. Salso comes from Salato (salty) and is called in the Greek Alukates. Numerous palaces and villas,
built in the 16th and 17th century are a sight to see. There are beautiful beaches, which invite to take a bath.

Nicolosi
Nicolosi, also called Porta dell’Etna, lies about 700 m above sea level at the southern slope of Etna.
It is an ideal starting point to set out for a ramble to the top of the mountain. The place was founded in the 12th Century and was often destroyed.
Worth seeing are the Parish Church and the Palazzo Cirelli from the 18th Century, Sant’Antonio Abbate from the Middle Ages,
the Museum of Etna with a collection of minerals and fossils and but least the Etna with its southern craters.
Oliveri
The former fishing village Oliveri is located at the Vorgebirge of the Tindari, at the north coast Siziliens, approx.. 60 km
west of Messina. Oliveri offers along its port promenade, small bars and nationaltypical restaurants. To visit: those antique
Greek-Roman city Tyndaris, the nature reservation Marinelle, grotten and lonely bays.

Palermo
Palermo is the largest city of Sicily. Dominated of the Monte Pellegrino (606m) is the city at pictorial bay at the north coast
of the island. Thus this city combines all extremes of the island in it. Next to splendid buildings beside elegant fashion shops,
restaurants there one finds traffic chaos and misery. Many cathedrals, palaces, wells are worth seeing. Beside these objects
of interest a trip into the "underworld" is worthwhile. Already under Arab rule the Qanat, an underground drinking water
system was put on which is to be visited still today.

Patti
Patti is an old Sicilian town on the north east coast of the island. It is famous for its ceramic industry and Norman cathedral.
From the marvellous, white, sandy beaches one can see the fire-spitting Aeolian Islands (also known as the Liparian Islands)
sparkling on the horizon. Patti has the remains of a Roman villa, with precious mosaics, a ceramics museum and the remains of
the Graeco-Roman settlement of Tyndaris, with the ruins of its Greek theatre. The nearby wildlife protection area of Marinello,
with its dunes and three salt lakes, invites walking, while along the coast there are many interesting grottoes, which can be
visited on foot or by boat. In summer, a boat service runs to the Aeolian Islands.

Pachino-Portopalo
Portopalo is the most southern village of Sicily. It is lying on the same level as Tunis (Africa) about 60 km southwest
of Siracusa. It has about 3640 inhabitants. In former times there were living many tuna-fishers. The place lies directly
at the sea, not far from a small island, which has a fortress, which is today the lighthouse. In Portopalo there is also
a lighthouse, a church with a sword fish on the spire and some shops. Pachino, the larger neighbouring municipality lies
only few kilometers north of Portopalo.
Ragusa
Ragusa with about 68.000 inhabitants is the capital and the name giver of the smallest province of Sicily.
After Ragusa was destroyed completely by an earthquake in the year 1963, two new places were built,
“Ragusa Alta” – the new town and “Ragusa Ibla” – the old town, which was rebuilt in the old structure
by the aristocracy. Since 1923 both places are one town. The old town with its buildings with baroque facades,
medievally lanes and places became in the year 2002 UNESCO World Heritage. Delightful is the “Giardino Ibleo”,
which invites especially in spring with numerous borders of narcissus and iris. The province Ragusa is a region
rife with extremes, characterized of the hinterland with walls of quarry stone, beaches with golden sand, historical sites,
cavern-settlements, from relics of the antiquity to buildings with the charm of the baroque.
San Pietro Clarenza
This place belongs to the province Catania. It lies in a hilly landscape about 463 m over the sea level on the
southern slope of the Aetna. It offers a marvelous view on the active volcano of Sicily. Very attractive is the
proximity to the Etna as well as to Catania with numberless objects of interest.

Santa Teresa di Riva
The small place lies at the eastern coast north from Taormina in a flat coastal landscape, 6 m over the sea level.
Worth seeing are many towers as well as the churches "Madonna del Carmelo" and "Porta Salvo".

San Vito lo Capo
At the most northwestern point of Sicily, in the province Trapani, lies this small fisher place with about 4000 inhabitants.
The place was founded from an antique castle of the Saracens, that became later a Pilgrimage church. Wonderful sandy beaches
and an excellent water quality invite to have unforgettable holidays.

Sciacca
Directly on the southwest coast, in the famous archaeological street between Selinunt and Agrigento, there lies Sciacca,
one of the oldest towns of Sicily. The significant pieces of art preserved even today, especially from the Middle Ages,
testify from the commercial town flowering in the Middle Ages. Today it is known for its sources of welfare and the natural
sweating baths in the grottos of the Monte San Calogero. Wonderful sand beaches and cleft coasts, together with the mild
climate make an ideal health resort and resort. To visit: the cathedral from 17. Cent., the church S.Margherita, the church del Carmine.

Siracusa
Siracusa is at the south eastern coast of Sicily and is one of the most significant places of Sicily.
The old town of Siracusa is lying on the peninsula Ortigia (the isle of quails), which has preserved
its medieval streets and the baroque appearance. Characteristic are the small lanes with cafes, restaurants
and shops of arts and crafts. The town went through different cultures and each era left its marks.
The Parco Archaeologico is a copious site of excavations with Greek theatre, roman amphitheatre and
the “Orecchio di Dionissio”, a grotto which was beaten in the rock. Many further places of interest
like temples, churches, old battlements are to visit in and round this historic town.

Stromboli
Stromboli is an island of the Lipari Islands and absolutely consists of a volcano that is more than 900 m high. It is one of the four active volcano of Italy.
This one erupts continuously and hurls columns of smoke and lava, which are several hundreds of metres high. It is possible,
to climb the mountain up to the craters together with a guide (depend on the activity of the volcano). A sensational sight
is the “Sciara del Fuoco”, a hillside, at which the lava is slowly flowing up from the mountain to the sea. Particular spectacular
is the view by night. Stromboli invites to walking tours and is a good starting point to take cruises to the other islands.
In the low season it is a place to pass calm holidays. On Stromboli there are no cars, buses and trains. It is only possible to go by electric car.
The island is reachable by ferry from Naples, Milazzo, Messina or Reggio di Calabria.
Taormina
The most visited town of Sicily lies about 200 m above sea level an close to the Etna. Witnesses of many bygone cultures characterized
the townscape. The city was always a holidays place and admitted personalities such as William II, Goethe, I.E. Lawrence, OSCAR savage,
Brahms and also noble Englishmen and Frenchman appreciated the beauty Taormina. Many stage directors used this beautiful place as setting of a film.
To a visit belong the sightseeing of the Cathedral San Nicolo, of the famous Theatro Greco and of the numerous churches and palaces.

Torrenova
Torrenova, belonging to the province Messina, is lying nearly in the middle between Messina and Palermo at the coast of northern Sicily.
The about 6 km long beach promenade of the place offers a marvellous view to the Lipari Islands. The ca 3800 inhabitants are living from agriculture,
fishing and craft. There are many fruit plantations and so it smells with oranges and citrons.

Trabia
In the province Palermo there lies the small municipality Trabia. The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and fishing.
Already 1154 the Arabic geographer Idrisi wrote about the mills in Trabia, that produces and exported Vermicelli (a special noodle form).
Sightseeings are e.g. the castle of the family Lanca, 15th century, the Mother Church, the Church S. Petronella and “La Tonnara di S. Nicola”
(former storage area for tuna).

All the different conquerors and inhabitants of the island ( e.g. Greeks, Romans, Arabs) have left their traces in the
traditions and the countless festivities on the islnad. Each mlittle village celebrates its festivity, and the religious
festivities are often accompanied by processions.
The most important worldly festivals are known even outside Sicily, like e.g. the Mandorlo in Fiore e festival internazionale
del Folclore in Agrigento or the Taormina Arte..
