Cilento - Palinuro The Name

The place Palinuro is also called the place of the thousand grottos. It is situated directly to the coast of the Cliento, approx. 170 km south of Naples in the region of Campania. Palinuro is specially known for its cape which rises  up the beaches. Around the cape there are a lot of grottos in partly reachable only by boat or by divers. The sea around Palinuro is a paradise for a diver. Fine sandy beaches and the crystal clear water invite to go swimming.

South of Palinuro lie the Archetiello and the Arco naturale, two stone sculptures made by the power wind. Typical in Palinuro is the Macchia. Between myrrh and broom you find a curiosity, "Primula Palinari", a flower only growing im this region.

The name of town and the cape has its origin in the legend of Palinuro, the helmsman of the "Aeneas" who fell in love with the beautiful girl called Kamaraton.

Unfortunately the love was not answered by the girl Kamaraton. Palinuro there-fore followed her picture into the deep sea. As a result the goddess Venus transformed the girl into a rock. Up on this rock the place Palinuro is situated today.
