Cilento - Giungano Impressions The legend

Only about 10 km far from Paestum at the border of the Cilento National Park there is the small commune Giungano with about 1000 inhabitants. It was founded 1000 years ago by the inhabitants of Paestum, to shelter from attacks of pirates and a spread of malaria. Today this small place offers contingent on its ideal position much calm and nature.

In the village there are some well received noble-palaces, particularly from the 17. Cent., as Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Picilli and Palazzo Stromilli. In Piazza Marconi there is, from the 15. Cent., the church della SS.Assunta, the patron saint of Giungano. According to tradition the remains of Assunta have been brought to Giungano by the inhabitants after the subversion of the Roman Empire.

Somewhat outside of the village there is the ancient Benedictine monastery from the 12. Cent. with its small chapel and "La Gola Tremonti" - the "three-mountains-maw". This place enables a view on a waterfall, which falls down about 50 metres from Monte Cantenna. The three mountains Monte Cantenna, Monte Sottano and Monte Soprano have given the name "Tremonti".

The small village offers for the daily needs small shops, bars and restaurants. Supermarkets and bigger shops are in the nearby villages Agropoli and Paestum

The wonderful coast with long sandy beaches and a crystal clear sea is only about 10 km away. In the archaeological excavation of Paestum, the ancient Grecian colony Posedonia, are three best survived temples. Also day trips to the Amalficoast, Sorrent or Capri, as well as to Naples, to the archaeological excavation of Pompeji and to the volcano Mount Vesuvius are advisable. From the port of Agropoli it is possible to make boat trips along the coast.

Southern of Giugano at the coast of Cilento and in the mountainous hinterland small villages like Pisciotta, Palinuro and Marina di Camerota are a sight to see. Furthermore it is possible to make wonderful walking and biking tours in the Cilento National Park
