Long time ago the place should have been founded by the refugees from Pyxus (the today's Policastro).
From the village Pixotum became then late Pisciotta. The special charm of Pisciotta Alta
(as it is called by the locals to differentiate it from the local part Marina di Pisciotta)
constitutes its position on a hill. Pisciotta has to owe its typical charm to its many small
lanes and stairs. It is also a very quiet place, because the architecture of the historical
centre does not make possible a motor traffic by the local centre.
The Piazza at the church is considered as centre of the place and is thereby for many inhabitants
an ideal meeting place. Here are also bars, restaurants and different shops.
Pisciotta is famous for its olive oil, the olive sort called to the village “Ulivo Pisciottano".
Many olive trees are three and four centuries old and explained to the physical monument.
Directly at the sea lies the local part Marina di Pisciotta, with a small fishing harbour,
a romantic seafront as well as different bars and restaurants. The places still belong to
the municipality Pisciotta: Caprioli and Rodio.

In Pisciotta still a very old fishing method is used, to catch anchovies (Alici).
As in bygone days the ancient Greeks fished, so the fishers of Pisciotta go today still
with their special boats and the special nets out to sea.
This fishing method is only possible
from April to July, when the sea is calm. The nets were lain miles away and caught up again in the late night.
They are kept on the boat in wooden boxes, without ice or other aids. Turned in the harbour, the anchovies
are cleaned immediately and are inserted in salt in terracotta.

Anchovy courts:
The anchovies are eaten freshly or inserted in salt, raw or cooked, or only with Pasta.
There are prescriptions as many as inhabitants in Pisciotta: e.g. raw anchovy salad,
anchovy sauce for the Spaghetti, filled or fried anchovies. It concerns always very easy ingredients.
