campania - Scario

impressions

the Name

Scario, a small dreamy fishing village, in the south of the Cilento, is at the gulf of Policastro. The little harbour and the harbour promenade  makes the place very charming. With a good visibility you can enjoy a dreamlike panorama with the mountains of Calabria on the horizon.

Coming from the south the coastal road is ending here und is going on towards the interior until Marina di Camerota. The mountains seem to dive directly into the sea, charming swimming bays and small beautiful beaches line up the coast. some of the are only by boat within reach.

The piazzas and the village church are directly at the harbour promenade and are the little heart of the town. Here you meet to exchange news. Bars, restaurants and some shops invite you to walk about under palms at the Lungomare.

Up from the harbour boat trips along the beautiful coast, to the grottos and to the harbour Porto Infreschi are daily offered..

The harbour

The real origin of the name Scaroi nobody seems to know and therefore there are a lot of speculations about the origin. One theory says that the name has a Greek origin: Skariòs. That word would relate to a little shipyard. For most people this is the most logical version, because the people of Scario have lived on repairing and maintaining fishing boats and larger ships from the beginning of this place.

Another version is that the name Scario comes from the word "scarico" which means to unload. Because in former times goods were only delivered by sailing ships called "Scario". Scario means the place of the loading and unloading.

Others look at Scario as the Italian version of scariu, which, in the Calabrian dialect, stands for a small part of the beach where boats were drained.
