The pictorial small town Tropea at the "Costa degli Dei" (the coast of the Gods), lies in about 40 m above sea level
and ranks among the most beautiful places of Calabria. The lonely bays, the fine sandy beaches and the crystal-clear
water enjoy all visitors.
Founded by Herkules, Tropea developed itself in the time of the Normans to a densely populated and rich place.
In the course of Feudalism, it became to the choice domicile of numerous noble families. Tropea retained nearly
its entire structure of the 17th century. Many churches, palaces and portals are in each corner of Tropea.
The church Santa Maria dell'Isola, which lies on beach rock in front of Tropea, is particularly worth seeing.
Romantic lanes, lively small places and many traditional cafes, shops and restaurants lend its completely special
charm to this typical Italian town. When there is fine weather, a view up to the Sicilian islands is possible.
A visit of the Lipari Islands is possible from Tropea by ferry. The fine white sandy beaches and the small bays
lie directly in Tropea and are reachable from the historical old part of town partly well to foot.
In front of the town there are many fruit -, vegetable- and olive plantation, that’s fruits form the basis
of the tropean kitchen, which you can enjoy together with fresh fish or shellfishes in numerous restaurants.

The charmful church Santa Maria dell ' Isola is enthroned on rock in front of the old part of Maratea.
The former Benedictine monk monastery probably has been once surrounded completely by the sea, today
the pilgrimage church can be attained from the beach by small stairs. The visit is worthwhile, for the
very reason that there is a marvelous panorama view and a beautiful garden.
Twice in the year, it is a goal
of pilgrim and because of the fantastic position, it is very popular as wedding church.
