CALABRIA

Calabria, the sunny peak of the Italian boot, with its intact nature, its bizarre steep coasts, bays with sandy beaches, nice coastal towns, its varied hinterland and its thousand year old culture has more to offer than a normal bathing holiday. Spared mostly from mass tourism you find fragrant forests, lonely landscapes in this region, inviting you to hike. Often you will come across traces of the rich historical past of Calabria. Greeks, Romans and Normans left their characteristic buildings. You you will find numerous relicts more or less in good condition, like Greek temples, Roman statues, Christian monasteries as well as Norman domes.

The most beautiful beaches of Calabria are at the Thyrenian Sea between the town of Pizzo and Nicotera. At the Capo Vaticano you will find wonderful lonely bays. You can partly reach them only by boat and get rocks, white sand and deep blue water. Out of the the peak season you are almost alone there. Below the charming little town of Tropea, the "St. Tropez of the South", there are beautiful broad sandy beaches.

The northern Calabria is dominated by the Pollino massif with peaks over 2000 meters high and an untouched nature. In the heart of the region you find the Sila with mixed forests, meadows, pastures, lakes and brooks. Obviously you also have some nice natural parks in which there are quite a lot of threatened species, e.g. the Parco Nazionale della Calabria.
