Calabria - Joppolo

The small place Joppolo, with ca. 2500 inhabitants, lies 20 km southern of Tropea between Capo Vaticano and Nicotera. It lies somewhat in a hilly landscape, embedded between olive groves and profuse vegetation. It offers a marvellous view on the Golfo Gioia Taura, on Capo Vaticano and within good sight even up to Sicily and the Lipari Islands.

Characteristic are the rocks of tuffs, on which the place was built. Its origin is to be due to the year 1300, when Artemidoro Joppolo, a brevet major from Sicily, built a castle and probably gave the place its name.

Directly at the coast is the district Marina di Joppolo with its stony beaches and the most beautiful cerulean sea.

Historic witnesses are the tower “Angioina” which is on the top of the hill and the pilgrim chapel “Madonna del Carmine”, aim of numerous pilgrims during the festivities on 15th and 16th July.
