Calabria, the sunny boot point of Italy, has to offer more than the classical bath vacation with its intact nature, weird precipitous coasts, picturesque bays with dreamlike sand beaches, pretty coast towns, its varied hinterland and the stone legacies of a millennium old history of civilisation. Spared still to a great extent from the mass tourism, this region offers, uniting mountains and sea, smelling forests and lonely landscapes, which invite walking-tours. Often you bump into the tracks of the rich past of Calabria. Greeks, Romans and Normans left their characteristic buildings in the different epochs. Thus one finds numerous relicts more or less well-received, like Greek temples, statues of the Romans, Christian monasteries as well as cathedrals from the Normans.

The most beautiful beaches of Calabria lie at the Tyrrhenian Sea between the small romantic town Pizzo and Nicotera, lying on a rock. At the Capo Vaticano you find beautiful lonely bays, which can be attained partly only by boat, rock reefs, white sand and a sea, in most diverse blue tones. Outside of the peak season (July and August) one is nearly alone here.

Also below the charming small town Tropea - the "Saint Tropez" of the south - there are wonderful wide beaches

In the north of Calabria lies the Pollino massif, with more than 2000 m for high summits and an unaffected nature, and in the heart of the country the Sila with the mixed forests, the meadows, pastures, brooks and lakes.

Naturally there are also some nice national parks e.g.  Parco Nazionale della Calabria. Still today live many rare and from the extinction threatened animal species and botanical species here.

A typical product of the area of Tropea is the red onion.

The red Tropea onion is well-known for over two thousand years. In its Naturalis Historia enumerates Pino IL Vecchio thirty complaints, which are remediably by the active substances of the onion, which was not disproved by the modern science.

Because of the unusual taste, the delicate aroma and particularly because of the digestibility, this kind of onion is highly estimated from gourmets all over the world. The aromatic tuber is an important component of the southern catering.
