Calabria - Amantea History

Directly at the Tyrrhenian coast lies the village Amantea with 13.000 inhabitants. The beautiful historic old town is a bit hillside and is characterized by small lanes and places which are partly only reachable by foot. Here are also many of the well-preserved palaces and churches, as e.g. the church “S. Bernardino”, the church “S. Biagio”, the “Palazzo delle Clarisse” (ancient monastery) and the ruin of the castle “Santa Maria di Carmine”.

The new quarter of Amantea with several shops, bars and restaurants offers to stroll up. Along the Lungomare there is the long sandy beach which invites to take a bath. From the small port there are going day-by-day ferries to the Eolian Islands which are also viewable by clear sight from Amantea.

About 3 km southern there is one of the most beautiful coast sections of this region, characterized by the rock spurs and the crystal clear water – ideal to take a freshening bath. Somewhat northern near the village Belmonte Calabro there is the WWF-protected sea-oasis, the “Oasi Blu Isca” with rare flora and fauna which is very interested for divers.

In the wonderful hinterland are marvellous walking tours in the forests and also rides on horseback possible. Well worth seeing are the small neighboured communes like Belmonte Calabro, Fiumefeddo and Longobardo, but also southern the villages like Pizzo and Tropea.
