Basilicata - Maratea The churches

The antique town Maratea lies to the feet of the mountain San Biagio at the Gulf of Policastro. Once consisting of two districts, Maratea Superiore and Maratea Inferiore, the later one only exists now. Maratea Superiore is completely depopulated and wholly destroyed. The origin of Maratea is not sure. One assumes that the town was founded by Greek settlers in the 8th century B.C., as well as some findings on the mountain San Biagio allow to suppose. But the presence of Romans has been confirmed by digs and archaeological digs. The place still retained the medieval appearance, with crooked lanes, small sites, stair ways, houses with arcades and some palaces from 16. - 18th century.

The beautiful coast of Maratea offers a marvelous landscape, innumerable bays, a beautiful beaches as well as singular grottos.

The most well-known characteristic of Maratea is reliably the monument of the Savior, a 22 m high white statue on the hilltop of the mountain San Biagio. By its size the Christ statue is evident of each point of the environment.

Many churches with important art treasures, the chapels, medal houses and the monastery testify the deep religiousness of the population. A small charming fishing harbour belongs to Maratea as well as the local part Marina di Maratea. The place is well-known by the Italians as an elegant resort with many houses and mansions in the country. The feasts of the San Biagio take a whole week, from first up to the second May Sunday. The whole summer concerts, theatrical performances and street festival are organized in Maratea.
