BASILICATA
The
region Basilicata, named also Lucania, lies in the south of Italy.
Embedded between Puglia, Campania and Calabria it has a narrow entrance to
the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionic Sea. Basilicata, a predominantly hilly
and mountainous region, offers fascinating mountain landscapes and a
varied vegetation, from the barren Tyrrhenian coast to the gentle banks of
the Ionic Sea, from the mountains of the Appenin covered with forests to
the moon landscapes of the deeply furrowed hills.
Many different peoples, like Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normannen,
Sarazenen have left their indications and so you can find here impressive
structural certifications of that thousands ancient history in many
places. Numerous nature parks and reservations are in the Basilicata. So
there is also one of the largest protected areas of Europe, "Parco
del Pollino", that has 200,000 hectares extend itself over two
regions, Basilicata and Calabria. In this part of genuine nature eagles,
vultures, boars and wolves have their biosphere. The Pinus Leucodermis,
the pine, is the symbol of the park.
The
UNESCO explained the town Matera as the cultural property of humanity. The
Sassi of Matera, hollow houses directly scooped from tuff stone rock, are
one of the oldest and most unusual settlements of the world. A part of the
film "the passion" of Mel Gibson was turned there.
The
Tyrrhenian coast of Basilicata, the gulf of Policastro, is approx. 30 kms
long and offers marvelous beaches (Maratea) and crystal-clear sea,
lonesome bays and mysterious grottos.
The
Basilicata offers innumerable possibilities for a special vacation: Nature
park for hiking, towns with important art treasures and churches, medieval
towns and fantastic beaches.
