Ostuni, also called the white town "La citta bianca",
was built on three hills and has got its name because of the
whitewashed houses. Not only the name "Astunéon" but also the white
houses and the whitewashed lanes remind of Greece.
The best-preserved charming old town has the typical steep staircases
and the arches between the houses. On the top of a hill there is the cathedral.
The younger districts reach on the terraces of the Murgia. The centre is the
Piazza della Libertà, which is between the old and the new town of Ostuni.
Here is an ancient monastery, today the town hall. Many restaurants, shops and
bars invite to ramble and to stay.
Only about 8 kilometres apart from Ostuni the coast of Marina
di Ostuni stretches over 50 km. Here are many bathing places strung together
and many beautiful bays, sandy beaches and rocky parts take turns. The excellent water quality
was distinguished several times by "Bandiera Blu". It is
possible to rent boats and to attend diving courses in Marina di Ostuni.
For golf-friends there is near
"Fasano" the "San Domenico Golf Club", reachable in only 20 minutes by car.
Nature lovers can make cycle- and walking tours or sea watching (only in the summer months)
in the proximity of the sea-nature-park "Torre Guaceto.
Further well-known villages as the Trulli-villages Alberobello, Cisternino,
the baroque village Lecce and also Otranto offer an aim for a day trip.
