Fasano

The town of Fasano with almost 40.000 inhabitants marks the border between the Salento and the Terra di Bari. The name Fasano probably recalls the big wild pigeon "Faso", that used to live in that area and is nowadays part of the city's coat of arms.

After the population had left the nearby ruins of Egnazia, around the year 1000 they settled at the place where Fasano is today. In the pretty old town it's a pleasure to stroll around the white washed alleys and the picturesque pergolas. The three-aisled main church impresses with an elaborate facade from the late Renaissance and a baroque altar. During the fight against the Turks in the 17th century the Mother of God appeared in the sky and led the Fasanesi to victory. Since then on June 2nd, the day it happened, a big celebration in honour of the Holy Mother of Pozzo Faceto takes place.

Around Fasano many varied attractions are waiting for visitors: The ruins of the settlement of Egnazia, in Roman times an important station in the antique Via Appia. It's all explained well on signs and objects that have been recovered from the ruins are presented in a worth-see museum on the grounds.

Especially for children the Safari-Zoo of Fasano is a great experience. By bus or your own car you drive through a large open-air area, where you can watch many animal species just like on an African safari. Sport lovers can try the nearby 18-hole golf course.

After so much culture and excitement all you need is a relaxing component: A bath in the thermae of Torre Canne. The tradition-rich resort offers not only an excellent tourist infrastructure but also a broad, gently sloping sandy beach.
