Alberobello
The town of the "Trulli" in the nice valley of Itria has got more than 1000 "Trulli".
They have been declared as a world heritage by the UNESCO.
The "Trulli" were the homes of the poor. Today a lot of the old inhabitants have left the uncomfortable houses.
Castel del Monte
The most famous castle in Apulia is the well preserved Castel del Monte. The mighty castle illustrates impressively
the historical importance that Apulia had already with the Normans. Friedrich the 2nd built this castle on an
octagonal ground plan with an octagonal tower. This crown of Apulia is enthroned majestically on a hill of the northern Murge,
only 15 km away from the Adriatic coast. Opening hours: Mon.-Sat. 8.30-19.00 h, Sun. and publ. holidays 9.00-13.00 h.
Foresta Umbra
The shadowy forest, a popular destination for lovers of nature, is one of the last Italian primeval forests
and has about 10.000 ha. The dark mixed forest is home of different kinds of orchids. The forest is crossed
by a lot of footpaths, armed also with signposts.
Grottaglie In between the hills of Murgia in the hinterland of the Tarent there is the place called Grottaglie.
Its well known for its ceramics. The ceramists leave their artificial trade and make the Grottaglie a very important art village.
The baroque period town of Lecce Between the 17th and 18th century the famous old town of Lecce,
also named " La Firence del Barocco", developed. For a lot of people it is the nicest baroque style town
in the south. The natural capital of the Salento is famous for its stone, which is a compact and homogeneous
honey coloured limestone. It was used to decorate streets, balconies, churches and palaces.
Matera
The town of Matera is the second provincial capital of the region Basilicata and is about 45 km away from the Ionian Sea.
Matera is known as the town of the Sassi.
The characteristics in Matera are the caves driven in the pumice stone.
People lived in these caves until the sixties. In 1993 they were
recognized as a " wealth of mankind" by the the UNESCO.
Ostuni-Citta bianca
Built in a Greek style the town is shining all in white and is already visible from the distance.
Not only the name "Astunéon" but also the all in white built houses and the whitewashed lanes remind you of Greece.
