Located between the trulli-valley and the coast, the remains from various epochs witness Carovigno's past, that's steeped in history.
Founded by the people of Messapiens, the town with today 15.000 inhabitants had to defend itself
again and again from invaders: the legendary Hannibal, the Normans, the Langobards and the Swabians, just to mention few of them.
Beyond the megalithic walls a bit outside the centre there are Aragonian wall remains from the 15th till 18th century,
with a couple of arches surrounding the Medieval town centre.
For centuries seigneurs ruled the town and the surrounding fertile land. As a token of their power and wealth they
had the Castello Dentice di Frasso built in the 14th/15th century, which was among others the see of the counts of Lecce.
The castle with its triangular ground plan and massive towers has been restored 100 years ago and nowadays houses among
others the town's library and the archaeological museum. Nearby there is the neo-Romanesque style church S.Anna,
used by the seigneurs as their private chapel.
Part of Carovigno and only few kilometres away is the sea resort Torre Santa Sabina, named after the tower
with a star shaped ground plan, sitting there since the 16th century.
The popular sea resort boasts a wide sandy beach, boat harbour and good tourist infrastructure.
The famous sights of the region such as Ostuni or Alberobello, are not far away.
As interesting and near is the nature reserve Torre Guaceto, where you can do hiking, bird watching, sailing and many more.
